Can You Fix A Coleman?

Yes. We repair them and install new ones.

Skyline Comfort Services is an authorized Coleman dealer, so new equipment can be ordered and installed, and this is the line that goes into more Raleigh homes for us than any other. Repair is the bigger half of the work, and we take Coleman calls on systems we have never seen. Being independently owned means no one here is pushed toward a replacement that a repair would have solved.

The Company Behind The Coleman Name, And What It Changes

Coleman has outlived three owners, and the company printing the name today is not the one that started it. Two of those handovers affect what a part costs you.

  • 1900W.C. Coleman starts selling gasoline pressure lamps in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, moving to Wichita two years later.
  • 1930sThe company enters home heating with oil-fired space heaters and gas floor furnaces.
  • 1990Coleman’s heating and cooling division is sold off and becomes Evcon Industries, still based in Wichita.
  • 1996York International buys Evcon, and the equipment sells as Coleman-Evcon.
  • 2005Johnson Controls buys York International, and the Coleman name goes with it.
  • 2016Johnson Controls merges with Tyco, and the parent company registers in Cork, Ireland.
  • 2025New Coleman systems ship with R-454B refrigerant in place of R-410A.

What you own is a brand name, not a factory. Coleman residential equipment is built by Johnson Controls in Wichita, Kansas, and three other names come off the same lines: York, Luxaire and Champion.

That is the single most useful fact on this page for anyone with an older unit. Four names through one factory means the service parts are shared across all four. If your model has been discontinued and the Coleman part number is dead, there is usually a York part with a different number that drops straight in.

It also means a technician who has worked on York equipment already knows yours. The layout, the boards and the fault codes carry over, so nobody is learning your system on your time.

A York Part Usually Fits A Coleman

When the Coleman number is out of stock, the York version usually is not. It fits the same, it carries the same warranty, and it is sitting on a shelf in the Triangle rather than on a truck from out of state. That difference is measured in days.

The Parent Company Is Not In Kansas

Johnson Controls is registered in Cork and runs its North American business from Milwaukee. Your unit was built in Wichita. Where a company files its paperwork has never changed a repair bill, and anyone leaning on it is selling rather than explaining.

The Coleman Lineup

A Coleman quote covers more than the unit in the yard. Knowing which pieces you already own is what keeps a replacement estimate from surprising you. These are the six you are most likely to have.

Air Conditioners

Summer Cooling Only

Where you land in Coleman’s range decides your rebate, which is why we start here rather than with the price. The XC4 sits at the bottom, the XC6 in the middle and the Echelon models at the top, and the step up is often smaller than the rebate it unlocks.

Heat Pumps

Reverses In Winter

Cools in July, reverses to heat in January. Coleman’s heat pumps run up to the HC20 Echelon. Going from a furnace to a heat pump changes your electric bill and your gas bill at the same time, so we work the numbers through with you before anyone orders anything.

Gas Furnaces

The Gas Side

Coleman’s furnaces cover the common efficiency ratings, and around Raleigh the indoor unit is a gas furnace more often than not. Most heating calls we take on these are a furnace that lights and then shuts straight back down, which is usually a dirty flame sensor rather than anything serious.

Air Handlers

Fan And Coil

Coleman’s air handlers are built to match each outdoor unit. An Echelon needs its own matching cabinet rather than whatever is already in the closet, and that catches people out on a swap, because the quote they were expecting covered one box and the job needs two.

Packaged Units

One Outdoor Box

You see plenty of these around Garner and east Raleigh, sitting on a concrete pad at the side of the house. Coleman builds packaged units as gas packs and heat pump packs. Everything being outside makes the service call simpler and the weather exposure harder on the cabinet.

Ductless Systems

Additions And Garages

Coleman makes ductless systems for the spaces the original ductwork never reached. These are repair work for us far more often than new installs, and the usual fault is a blocked drain line in the indoor head.

What Makes A Coleman A Coleman

Three features separate a Coleman from the systems around it. Two of them change how the house feels, and the third decides what a big repair costs you. Most homeowners are told about none of them.

01

Coleman Sells Three Compressor Types, And They Feel Different In August

Coleman splits its range by how the compressor runs. The XC4 runs at one speed, either full power or off. The XC6 adds a lower second speed on its bigger sizes. Echelon models vary their speed continuously.

The speed changes how your house feels in summer. A single-speed system cools fast and then shuts off, and a short run does not pull much humidity out of the air. A variable-speed system runs longer at lower power, and that is what actually dries a house out. In a Raleigh August, that is the difference you notice.

02

The Hx3 Control Speeds Up Repairs But Only Works With Coleman Parts

Echelon systems use a touchscreen control called Hx3. The thermostat and both halves of the system are wired to talk to each other, instead of the simple on-off wiring an ordinary thermostat uses.

The benefit is that the system records its own faults. Something that would take an hour to track down often shows up as a code on the screen, so you pay for less diagnostic time. The catch is the replacement parts. An Hx3 thermostat and its circuit boards only work with each other, so you cannot fit a thermostat from a hardware store, and the Coleman parts cost more than standard ones.

03

Coleman Gives You 90 Days To Register, Longer Than Most Brands

Coleman covers parts for ten years if you register the system online within ninety days of installation. On qualifying models, that same registration adds lifetime coverage on the compressor and the heat exchanger. Miss the ninety days and parts coverage drops to five years.

That one form is worth thousands of dollars, and most homeowners are never told it exists. A compressor failing in year seven is either covered or billed in full, and the only thing that decides it is whether somebody registered the system in time. Ninety days is more than most brands give you.

Reading The Model And Serial On A Coleman

The data plate carries the size, the efficiency level and the build year. Coleman is one of the easier brands to date once you know which characters to look at, and the same rule covers three other names. Our brands hub shows where to find the plate.

The model number

XC4 single speed · XC6 the mid step · HC20 Echelon, variable speed

The letters and digit at the start tell you the family, and Coleman names its families after the efficiency level rather than hiding it. The digits after that give the size.

The serial number

W 1 L 6 0299 95

Read the second and fourth characters together and you have the year, so this one is 2016. The third character is a letter standing for the month. Photograph both numbers once and keep them on your phone.

EraHow The Date Reads
October 2004 To NowOne letter, then digits. Second and fourth characters give the year.
1992 To October 2004Four letters, then six digits. The year is a letter, not a number.
Before 1992All numeric, ten digits, month first and year after.

On serials that open with four letters, the year letters repeat on a cycle, so one letter can mean two years twenty-one years apart. The published tables disagree, so we do not print one. What is certain is that four letters means the unit predates October 2004, and at that age the exact year rarely changes what you should do.

Since 2004 all four Johnson Controls brands read the same way, so a York indoor unit and a Coleman outdoor one can both be dated from the same rule.

What Coleman Repairs Cost, And What Fails Most

A Coleman breaks in the same places as anything else, and on the common failures the price is the same. What is unusual is how wide the gap is between the cheap parts and the expensive ones.

The cheap ones first. Capacitors, contactors, ignitors, flame sensors and blower motors are stocked locally, fit all four Johnson Controls brands, and cost no extra because of the name. A worn capacitor is one of the most common summer faults we see, and a clogged drain line is the one a maintenance visit would have caught first. The diagnostic fee is $89 flat and is not credited toward the repair.

Then the expensive ones. The Hx3 control and its boards only work with each other. An evaporator coil has to be ordered, so the repair waits on a delivery. And a compressor is expensive on any brand, which is why we ask about the ninety-day registration before anything else.

Worth checking before you replace half a system.

Johnson Controls moved Coleman to R-454B in 2025, the same year most of the industry switched, and since January 2026 a new R-410A system cannot be installed. R-410A is still produced for servicing, so your system stays repairable and we repair them every week. The part that catches people is the pairing. A 2026 outdoor unit and a 2015 indoor coil cannot share a refrigerant, so on an older system the outdoor half cannot be replaced on its own.

When A Coleman Is Worth Fixing

With a year from the serial number, here is roughly where the answer lands. Treat these as starting points, because what actually failed moves the line either way.

  1. Under Five Years

Repair, and there is rarely much to debate. Every Coleman carries parts coverage for at least five years whether anybody registered it or not, so a failure now is a labor cost rather than a parts cost.

  2. Five To Ten Years

Registration decides this one, which is why we ask about it first. A Coleman registered within ninety days still has parts coverage, so a compressor in year eight comes to you as a labor charge. One that nobody registered lost coverage at five years, and the same failure is billed in full.

  3. Over Ten Years

Parts coverage has ended either way, and a Coleman this age almost certainly uses R-410A, which costs more every year. We are glad to repair one and we do. The difference is that a large repair at this age buys you months rather than years.

Whichever band you land in, nothing gets decided at your door. You will have the numbers in writing and you can sit with them overnight. We would rather you called two other companies than felt pushed by this one.

How We Work On Coleman Systems

Repair And Service

The $89 diagnostic buys you an answer, not a sales visit. We photograph the fault, explain what it is doing to the system, and price the repair before anything gets opened up. That fee is charged separately and is not credited toward the work.

Installing New Systems

The model you choose decides your rebate, so we price the range and show you where paying more starts to pay back and where it stops. We order through our dealer account, install the system, and check the refrigerant charge and the airflow before handing it over. Estimates are free.

Owner-operated and independent, with more than twenty years between the two people who will be at your house.

Questions About Coleman

Call (919) 629-1084
Is Coleman made in America?

Yes. Coleman residential units are built in Wichita, Kansas. The parent company, Johnson Controls, is registered in Cork, Ireland and runs North America from Milwaukee.

Who owns Coleman HVAC now?

Johnson Controls, since it bought York International in 2005. York had bought the business from Evcon Industries in 1996.

Is York the same as Coleman?

Same manufacturer, same Wichita plant, sold through different dealers. Luxaire and Champion come off those lines too, so parts fit all four brands.

How long should a Coleman last?

Fifteen to twenty years is realistic. The install matters more than the brand, and the ones we see fail early were rushed, oversized or never serviced.

Do Coleman parts cost more than other brands?

No. Everyday parts fit all four Johnson Controls brands, so they are easy to source and normally priced. The Hx3 control and Echelon boards are the exceptions.

Get The Age And The Warranty Settled Today
