Start Here If Something Is Wrong Right Now
I smell something burning when the heat comes on. Should I keep using it?

My carbon monoxide alarm went off. What do I do first?
Leave the home immediately and call 911 or the fire department from outside. Do not stay inside trying to find the source of the carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide cannot be seen or smelled, so the alarm is your warning. Once emergency responders confirm the home is safe, a qualified HVAC technician should inspect fuel-burning equipment such as the furnace or water heater before it is used again.
The breaker for my system keeps tripping. Can I keep resetting it?
No. Reset it once, and if it trips again, leave it off and schedule service. A breaker that keeps shutting off is protecting your system from an electrical problem.
Repeated resets can stress electrical components and make the underlying issue worse. The cause could range from a failing capacitor or compressor issue to wiring problems or another electrical fault that requires proper testing.
There is ice on my outdoor unit in the middle of summer. Do I turn it off?

Air Conditioning
My AC only keeps up at night. Is that normal?

My system still uses R-410A. Can it still be serviced?
Yes. Existing R-410A systems can still be repaired and maintained. The refrigerant transition affects new equipment production, not the ability to service the systems already installed in homes.
If your R-410A system needs a repair, the bigger factors are usually age, equipment condition, and repair cost. A system that is otherwise in good shape may still be worth maintaining rather than replacing.
What happens on install day, and do I need to be home?
Someone over 18 should be available when the installation starts and when the work is completed. A typical replacement includes removing the old equipment, installing the new system, connecting components, and testing operation.
Before the job is finished, the system should be checked for proper airflow, refrigerant charge, temperature performance, and overall operation. Homes with attic access, duct modifications, or electrical upgrades may require additional time.
Can I replace only the outdoor unit to save money?

Heating and Furnaces
Why does my furnace run but still leave my house cold?

The last tech said my flame sensor was dirty. Will that keep happening?

Heat Pumps
Why does my heat pump blow air that feels cool in winter?

What is the outdoor unit doing when it steams and rattles in winter?
It is usually going through a defrost cycle. Heat pumps pull heat from outdoor air, which can cause frost to build on the outdoor coil during colder weather. The system temporarily reverses operation to melt that frost, which can create steam, noise, and a short burst of cool air indoors.
A normal defrost cycle lasts only a few minutes before heating resumes. If the outdoor unit stays covered in ice, defrosts repeatedly, or never returns to normal heating, there may be an issue with airflow, sensors, refrigerant levels, or other components.
What is auxiliary or emergency heat on my thermostat, and should I use it?
Auxiliary heat is your heat pump's backup heating system that helps during colder weather or when the system needs extra support. Emergency heat turns off the outdoor heat pump and uses backup heat only.
Leave your thermostat on its normal heat setting unless your heat pump has stopped working or a technician tells you to use emergency heat. In Raleigh's climate, backup heat may run during colder periods or defrost cycles, but it should not operate constantly during normal conditions.
Why does my heat pump run for long periods on mild days?
