Why Raleigh Heat Pumps Wear Out Sooner

Your heat pump never gets an off-season in Raleigh. It cools through a long, humid summer, then heats through the winter, so it logs more hours than a furnace or an AC would alone. Sizing decides how hard those hours hit. Inside the Beltline, we find units someone sized by eye decades ago. Out toward Brier Creek, it is usually builder-grade equipment picked to hit a budget. Our two owners bring more than 20 years of combined experience, and we measure your house before we price any heat pump replacement.

Signs Your Raleigh Heat Pump Needs Replacement

One rough morning proves nothing on its own. What tells you where your heat pump stands is the pattern across a whole Triangle year, on the bill in December and on the thermostat in August. Catch these six signs early and you can plan the replacement yourself, before a cold snap picks the day for you.

The backup heat runs in mild weather.

Electric strips cost far more to run, and on a mild day they are covering for a compressor that has lost capacity.

A quote names the compressor or the reversing valve.

They are the two costliest parts on a heat pump, and fitting either one to an aging system rarely pays back.

It ices over and stays iced.

Light frost is normal in winter, but a coil that stays white for hours means the defrost control or the charge has failed.

Refrigerant goes in every season.

A heat pump is a sealed system, so any top-up means a leak, and each recharge only delays the next one.

Rooms drift several degrees apart.

A weakening compressor moves less heat, so the rooms farthest from the air handler fall behind first.

The outdoor unit is loud in a new way.

A grind signals worn motor bearings, and a hard hum at startup points to a weak capacitor or a struggling compressor.

Not every warning sign means your heat pump needs replacing. A stuck valve or a failed sensor on a system still in its first 10 years is a heat pump repair, and we will tell you so. A tired system can often buy another season on two visits a year. When the compressor fails on a unit past 12 years old, we price the heat pump replacement and the cooling side together. On a heat pump, they are one machine.

How Much Does Heat Pump Replacement Cost In Raleigh?

Your heat pump replacement price comes from a free in-home estimate, written down before you decide anything. Three things move the number: the size your house needs, the efficiency tier you pick, and whether your ductwork and electrical panel can carry the new system. If your system is still worth fixing, a repair visit starts with our flat $89 diagnostic instead. Monthly payment options can spread the cost, and with the federal tax credit gone, the Duke Energy rebate matters more than it used to.

Cheap Heat Pump Installs Versus Ours

The Price Difference Is In The Install Work

Holding two heat pump replacement quotes that sit thousands apart on the same equipment? What separates them is the work around the unit, from sizing to start-up. We quote the tier your house needs and price the others beside it, so you can compare without being talked up a level.

Why Raleigh Homeowners Call Skyline For Heat Pumps

The Sizing Is Where The Money Goes

We measure before we size.

Your heat pump has to handle a July afternoon and a February morning from one box. We work out what your house needs for both before anyone picks a size. Guess wrong, and electric backup carries your winter.

Nobody here works on commission.

Our two owners are the technicians, so the person at your door is the person who runs the business. There is no sales team and no quota, which means the tier you end up with is the one that fits.

We handle the permit and the rebate.

We pull the mechanical permit your town requires, and we submit the Duke Energy rebate on every system that qualifies. Duke gives you 90 days after installation to claim it, so we file it before time runs out.

“Get the size wrong and the electric strips pay for it all winter.” How Jon and Henry quote every heat pump: measure the house for both seasons first, then price the tiers against it. Read our reviews ›

The Skyline Comfort Services Story

Built in the Triangle, on word of mouth

Skyline isn’t a call center with a logo on it. Founders Jon Varela and Henry Amaya met at a large citywide HVAC company and got tired of being pushed to sell systems people didn’t need. So they built a company that does it the right way.

They built Skyline on word-of-mouth and Nextdoor recommendations, focused on honest work and helping homeowners understand their systems. Whatever your system needs, that means a straight answer, not a sales pitch.

Your Heat Pump Replacement, Step By Step

From the first phone call to the readings on your invoice, here is how a heat pump replacement with us runs.

1The Call

One of us picks up. Tell us roughly how old the system is and what it has been doing, and we book the estimate at a time that suits you.

2The Measure

At the free estimate, we work out what your house needs in both seasons, then check the ductwork, the electrical panel, and the drain to see whether a straight swap is realistic or wishful.

3The Written Options

Every tier comes back priced across the brands we install, with the Duke rebate marked on each one that qualifies. Nothing is ordered until you pick one and tell us to go.

4Install And Start-Up

We set the system, charge it by weight to the manufacturer's spec, check the airflow, and run it in both heating and cooling before we walk you through what changed.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs

Call (919) 629-1084
How long does a heat pump replacement take?

A straight heat pump swap usually takes one day, so you have heating and cooling back that evening. Add a day if the electrical panel or the ducts need work.

Do I have to replace the indoor unit as well as the outdoor one?

Yes. A heat pump’s efficiency rating holds only for the indoor and outdoor pair tested together, so a new outdoor unit on an old coil earns neither the rating nor the Duke rebate.

Can I keep my gas furnace and add a heat pump?

You can, and that setup is called a dual fuel system. The heat pump handles the mild stretch that makes up most of a Triangle winter, and the gas furnace takes the coldest nights.

What size heat pump does my house need?

Most Raleigh homes need between 2 and 4 tons, but only a measurement tells you yours. An oversized heat pump runs in short bursts and leaves the air damp.

Does a new heat pump need a permit in Raleigh?

It does. Replacing a heat pump needs a mechanical permit from your local office, and we pull it as part of the job. Where Wake County issues the permit, it is one $75 fee, while Raleigh, Cary and Durham set their own.

Will a heat pump keep up in a Raleigh cold snap?

A right-sized heat pump carries a Raleigh house on its own through almost every winter day. Backup heat covers the handful of mornings when it cannot keep up.

Will you file my Duke Energy rebate?

Yes, on every heat pump that qualifies. Duke Energy’s Smart $aver program requires the claim within 90 days of installation, so we check eligibility at the estimate and submit it once the job is done.
