Can You Work On A Goodman?

Yes. We repair them and install new ones.

Most Goodman calls we get are repairs, simply because there are so many of them in Wake County already. Skyline Comfort Services is an authorized Goodman dealer, so new equipment can be ordered and installed as well. We are independently owned, which means nobody here has a quota telling them to sell you a system. Your Goodman gets worked on whether or not we put it in.

Who Builds A Goodman, And Where It Comes From

Goodman has changed hands twice since a Texas businessman started it. Both changes still matter when you are pricing a part or wondering where the equipment was built.

  • 1975Harold V. Goodman starts the company in Texas, making flexible duct and plastic registers.
  • 1982Goodman buys the Janitrol line and begins building air conditioners and heat pumps.
  • 1997Goodman acquires Amana, bringing the two brands under one owner.
  • 2001The kitchen appliance business goes to Maytag, and heating and cooling stays with Goodman.
  • 2012Daikin Industries of Japan acquires Goodman Global.
  • 2017The Waller, Texas manufacturing campus opens.
  • 2022The company is renamed Daikin Comfort Technologies North America.

Goodman is owned in Osaka and built in Texas. Daikin Industries bought the company in 2012. The equipment sold in the United States is made in Waller, about an hour northwest of Houston.

One thing follows from that, and it is practical rather than patriotic. Daikin builds Goodman, Amana and Daikin equipment as one operation, sharing engineering and sharing parts. That is why the serial number rule further down this page works on all three names.

So if your outdoor unit says Goodman and your indoor coil says Amana, nothing is wrong. Mixed plates are common on Triangle houses and they are not a sign that somebody cut a corner. What decides whether a part fits is the model number, not the name stamped on the cabinet.

Owned In Japan, Built In Texas

Goodman gets called a foreign brand and an American brand, usually by somebody trying to sell you something else. Daikin Industries in Osaka owns the company. The equipment going into Wake County homes is built by workers in Waller, Texas. Both of those are true at once.

If The Indoor Unit Says Amana

Goodman and Amana have had one owner since 1997, and plenty of Triangle systems end up carrying both names. The warranty is written per unit rather than per system, so we read both data plates before quoting instead of assuming they match.

What Goodman Builds

The Goodman name goes on more than the unit outside. Here is what each piece does and which one you most likely own.

Air Conditioners

Your Cooling Unit

Goodman’s cooling lineup runs from basic single-speed models up to variable-speed ones that ease up and down instead of switching hard on and off. When a Goodman stops cooling, the fault is usually electrical and usually cheap, which is why we diagnose before anyone mentions replacement.

Heat Pumps

Winter And Summer

Heat pumps do both jobs from one unit, and Goodman builds them up to variable speed. Our short cold spells make them practical here. Whether one suits your house comes down to two things, how well the ductwork moves air and whether the system is sized right, and we check both.

Gas Furnaces

Gas Heat Indoors

The furnace makes the heat and the blower and ducts move it around. Goodman gas furnaces come in several efficiency levels. When one will not light or cannot keep up, the cause is nearly always the ignitor, the flame sensor or a dirty burner.

Air Handlers And Coils

The Electric Option

Electric houses use an air handler in place of a furnace, most often paired with a heat pump. Goodman lists air handlers to match each outdoor unit, and the match is what protects the efficiency rating you paid for, so we quote the two together.

Price A Matched System

Packaged Units

Outside In One Piece

Common on ranch houses and in older Wake County subdivisions where there was never an indoor closet to give up. Goodman builds packaged units in several configurations, and access is usually easier than a split system because everything is in one place.

Ductless Systems

Rooms Without Ducts

Goodman makes ductless equipment for sunrooms, converted attics and workshops, the rooms the original ductwork never reached. We repair far more of these than we install, so if yours is down, that is the call to make.

What Makes A Goodman A Goodman

Goodman differs from most brands in three ways. The first one decides whether you can replace half a system or have to replace all of it, so it is worth knowing before you collect quotes.

01

Goodman Uses R-32 Refrigerant, Not The R-454B Most Brands Use

When the industry moved off the old R-410A refrigerant, Daikin put Goodman and Amana on R-32. Most other brands went to R-454B instead. The two are not interchangeable, and the letters at the start of your model number tell you which one your system uses.

Settle this before you accept any part-system quote. A new R-32 outdoor unit will not work with an older indoor coil, so “we will just swap the outside unit” is not an option once the refrigerant changes. Your existing R-410A Goodman is fine and we still service it. This only matters when you replace, and then it matters a lot.

02

Goodman Uses Common Parts, So Repairs Rarely Wait On An Order

Goodman uses parts shared across the industry rather than designing its own versions. Capacitors, contactors, condenser fan motors and blower motors are all standard components that fit a range of equipment.

In practice that means we can usually get the part the same day, and it rarely carries a markup for the brand name. A Goodman repair is less likely to become a special order and a week of waiting. We still identify the exact part from your model number, but you are less often stuck waiting on a delivery.

03

In North Carolina You Must Register A Goodman To Get 10 Years Of Parts

Goodman covers parts for ten years if the system is registered within sixty days of installation. If nobody registers it, coverage drops to five. Premium models add lifetime compressor coverage for the original owner.

Homeowners in California, Florida and Georgia get the full coverage whether or not the form was filed. North Carolina is not on that list. Here the paperwork genuinely decides whether a failed compressor is covered or billed to you, so we check your registration status before quoting a big repair.

How To Read The Numbers On Your Goodman

Goodman has used one serial number rule since the 1970s, which makes it the easiest brand in your driveway to date. No eras to look up and no letter tables to argue about. Our brands hub shows where to find the data plate, and the rest is below.

The model number

GLXS4B0361 · GSXN402410

The letters at the start tell you the equipment type, and on newer units they also tell you the refrigerant. A model starting with GLXS uses R-32. One starting with GSXN uses R-410A. This is why an online decoder written before 2025 will not recognize a newer unit.

The serial number

211012345

The first two digits are the year and the next two are the month, so 2110 means October 2021. That rule has not changed in fifty years, which is unusual in this industry and useful to you.

EraHow The Date Reads
2408August 2024. Same rule.
1512December 2015. Same rule.
0903March 2009. Same rule.

One catch worth knowing. The serial tells you when the unit was built, not when it was installed, and equipment can sit at a supplier for months. If a warranty claim falls close to the cutoff, the installation paperwork settles it, not the plate. A few older units and through-the-wall models also use an older letter format instead.

Stand at the unit, read us the serial number, and you will know the age before you hang up.

What Goodman Repairs Cost, And What Fails Most

A Goodman fails in the same places as any other brand, and on the everyday parts the price is the same. The money sits in two components and one regulation, and all three are worth understanding before you approve anything.

Start with the routine. Capacitors, contactors, condenser fan motors, blower motors and control boards are what we actually carry and replace, and all of them are used across several manufacturers. A clogged drain line, which a Triangle August produces plenty of, is a drainage problem rather than a brand problem, and a maintenance visit prevents it. The diagnostic fee is $89 flat and is not credited toward the repair.

Then the two expensive ones. An indoor coil has to be ordered, so the wait is on the supplier rather than on us. A compressor is the most expensive single part in the system, which is why we settle the warranty registration question before writing that quote.

Where the refrigerant rules stand now.

Since January 2026, a new R-410A system cannot be installed anywhere in the country. That rule is about new equipment only. The system already sitting beside your house is legal, it is serviceable, and we service them every week. What has changed is price. R-410A costs more each year as production winds down, so it shows up on a large refrigerant charge rather than on a capacitor, and it is one of the figures we put in front of you on an older system.

Is It Worth Fixing?

Once the serial number gives you a build year, here is where this usually lands. Goodman equipment tends to run a little shorter than the premium brands, though how it was installed matters more than the name on the cabinet.

  1. Under Eight Years

Repair, nearly always. A Goodman this age has plenty of life left, especially if the fault is a common part and the rest of the system is sound. Check the model and serial before approving anything major, because a registered system may still be inside its ten-year parts coverage.

  2. Eight To Twelve Years

What failed decides this one. A capacitor or a motor on a system that has been looked after is money well spent. A coil or a compressor deserves a harder look at the condition of everything around it and at which refrigerant it uses.

  3. Past Twelve Years

Worth pricing both ways, though age alone settles nothing. We have kept well-maintained Goodmans running well past this. The difference is that a major repair at this age buys you a few more years rather than another decade.

You get both prices side by side in writing, and then we leave you alone with them. There is no follow-up call unless you ask for one, and financing is there if the timing is bad rather than the decision.

What We Do With Goodman Systems

Repair And Service

The price you approve is the price you pay. We diagnose the fault, photograph it, put a number on it in writing, and only then start work. The $89 diagnostic is charged separately and is not credited toward the repair.

Installing New Systems

When a new system is the better answer, we measure what your house actually needs rather than copying the size of the old equipment, and we check the ducts and the indoor unit before anyone talks about the box outside. Estimates are free, and we file the Duke Energy rebate paperwork for you when your system qualifies.

Both owners are technicians, so whoever answers your call is the person who will be working on your Goodman in Raleigh.
